Introduction to Solar Green Roof Integration

Enhancing Green Roof Performance and Sustainable Energy Generation

Green roofs and solar panels are often viewed as wholly separate rooftop technologies, however, thoughtful combination of the two can actually maximize the benefits of both systems and enhance green roof co-benefits and solar power generation.

In general, rooftops comprise approximately 19-24% of urban surfaces, in many cases contributing to stormwater runoff, urban heat islands, and a loss of natural green space. Both green roofs and rooftop photovoltaics leverage those traditionally underutilized rooftop spaces to advance sustainability and climate mitigation best practices. In most cases these two technologies are viewed as completely separate technological solutions to completely separate objectives, but in reality, these two technologies are in fact highly complimentary and can actually enhance each other’s functionality.
This course aims to understand the basic principles and functionalities of the two, identify areas of synthesis, and explore how to maximize benefits and returns in projects that incorporate both.

Blaine Stand, GRP

Blaine Stand is an anthropologist specializing in sustainability planning and implementation with the ultimate goal of developing communities that are healthy, equitable, and resilient. With a focus on human interaction with the built environment, he examines how people influence and are influenced by the environment and policies around them, and how sustainable infiltrations translate both hard and soft benefits to the communities in which they are installed. As Green Roofs for Healthy Cities' Professional Resources Manager, he oversees the development and deployment of professional training opportunities, industry resources, policy advocacy, and member services.
